Glass Study Group - July 10, 2003
The
July glass study meeting was attended by 13 folks and over 50 pieces of glass.
The topic was glass animals. Jaime Robinson lead a short presentation on the animal
books available over time and shared some examples. These resources include Evelyn
Zemel's AMERICAN GLASS ANIMALS A TO Z (1978); GLASS ANIMALS OF THE DEPRESSION
ERA by Lee Garmon and Dick Spencer (1993); and GLASS ANIMALS & FIGURINES by
Debbie and Randy Coe (2003). The group identified several animals and a number
of other pieces brought to the meeting. A large fish-shaped fishbowl produced
by L.E. Smith Glass, a wonderful opalescent French SABINO gazelle figurine, an
elephant with an incense burner on his back by New Martinsville Glass and slag
glass animals by Imperial glass were among others receiving admiring comments.
Shown in the image from left to right is Duncan & Miller's large and solid
crystal "fat goose," Paden City glass goose in blue, Viking glass's
#1321 Epic rooster 9 1/2 inches tall in persimmon, Fostoria's "running"
squirrel #2631/702B in amber satin (mist) and Co-operative Flint Glass's covered
dog #570 in crystal.
