Glass Study Group - February 13, 2003
The
Triad - Replacements Glass study Group held it's regular monthly
meeting on Thursday, Feb 13th at Replacements, LTD. The theme was
candy boxes, candy dishes and things that hold candy in celebration
of Valentines Day. 28 candy dishes and 21 other pieces of glass
were brought by the 12 persons attending. The items varied from
an elegant and heavy Rich Cut circa 1890 cut glass to a Teaberry
Epic line 1960's Viking Glass candy dish. A wonderful selection
of oil lamps in the Peanut pattern was on the table in seven different
sizes from finger lamps to large library lamp. An unplanned perk
was that many of the glass pieces were filled with chocolates and
candy for sharing. The usual light refreshments were enjoyed as
well as an amazing amount of Valentines candy.
One of the learning points of the evening was:
The diverse manufacturers who made strikingly similar tall, footed
and paneled pressed crystal candy dishes in very similar styles.
Heisey, Westmoreland and a possible Dunbar glass example were shared.
We were reminded that a successful form was often copied by many
glass houses and distinguishing such similar forms today can be
difficult.
